School

Our School is open to all children who would like to learn the Greek language and culture whether they or their parents currently speak Greek or not. Greek is taught as a foreign language and children at all levels are welcome.

We run classes to suit all levels from Reception class to the National exams of GCSE and GCE A’ Level. We generally follow the curriculum set by the Greek and Cypriot Governments, however, we recognise that for many children Greek is now not spoken in the home and therefore we place more emphases on teaching it as a foreign language. Apart from language lessons, our curriculum includes history, culture, dance, drama and religion.

Our class sizes are kept small to aid learning and our teachers are carefully selected by interview and police checked. They are generally all Greek speakers who are qualified and or have proven experience of teaching Greek as a foreign language. Short Catechism classes to introduce children to the Greek Orthodox religion are also held and Father Samuel holds a special church service for the children once a month on Saturday mornings where they can take Holy Communion.

The School runs on Saturday mornings from its site at The Three Hierarchs Greek Church, Community Hall, in Harehills Avenue, Leeds, from 10am to 2pm.

As a registered charity we are supported by both the Greek and Cypriot governments who provide a qualified teacher on long term secondment from Greece (Greek government) and a financial contribution towards another (Cypriot Government). Our income mainly comes from the fees we charge but this is never enough to cover the expenses of the school so we supplement it by fundraising events – so please support us!

Fees for the academic year (35 weeks) are: 1st child £190, 2nd child £135, 3rd child £80. Funds are available in cases of hardship so no child need be excluded.

What we do every Saturday ...

The primary aim of the Greek Community School is to teach the students the Greek Culture in general. This is done through the means of formal teaching, cultural activities and other forms of playing, which take place during the School's operating hours - Saturdays (see calendar) from 10:00 to 14:00.
