Summer's Easter
The Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos (the Mother of God) is described by the Holy Fathers of the Orthodox Church as the Easter of summertime to assign the due importance to this Feast. As it is to be expected then, our preparation for this 'Easter' consists of fasting and regular church services. Fasting commences on the 1st August and ends with the Divine Liturgy on the 15th August (when the congregation partake in Holy Communion - having prepared appropriately). Fish can be eaten during this fast on the 6th August (due to the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Saviour). As the 15th August falls on a Friday (which is normally a fasting day) only fish is allowed on that day. In addition to the regular services of vespers, matins and divine liturgy there are daily services of the Supplicatory Canon (alternating the lesser - small with the greater - long canon) between the 1st and 13th August. For more details on the services of August download the relevant service timetable.
